A combined quality analysis of the satellite data and a performance analysis of the retrieval algorithm was performed. The assessment yielded about 75 percent successful retrievals. The histogram of pattern correlation between best estimate and observed SAR spectra is sharply peaked at 0.9. The retrieval was repeated using 1,000 collocated buoy spectra as rst guess. Both retrievals agreed very closely in terms of the mean spectral parameters, con rming that the retrieval is independent of the rst guess. The azimuthal cut-o wavenumber, a measure of the rms orbital velocity, was investigated. Despite the limited resolution in azimuth due to this cut-o , about 75 % of the swell is explicitly resolved by the SAR, proving its general ability to detect a signi cant part of the ocean wave eld. Comparing the cut-o wavenumber to the wind speed no simple relationship between both quantities could be found, as additional e ects such as wave age or fetch were not taken into account.

On the Retrieval of Significant Wave Heights from Spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (ERS-SAR) using the Max-Planck Institut (MPI) Algorithm
Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) onboard satellites is the only source of directional wave spectra with continuous and global coverage. Millions of SAR Wave Mode (SWM) imagettes have been acquired since the launch in the early 1990’s of the first European Remote Sensing Satellite ERS-1 and its successors ERS-2 and ENVISAT, which has opened up many possibilities specially for wave data assimilatio...

An overview is given of current operational methods for retrieving two-dimensional ocean wave spectra from near real-time ERS-1 SAR wave mode (SWM) imagette spectra. The SWM data quality and performance of the WASAR algorithm are assessed. Sensitivity analyses and validation studies are performed using two-dimensional NOAA buoy data as well as TOPEX and ERS-1 altimeter-derived signiicant wave h...
متن کاملCross Sea Detection Based on Synthetic Aperture Radar (sar) Data and Numerical Wave Model (wam)
The present paper is about the detection of cross seas based on ERS-2/SAR wave mode data and comparison to WAM model. A case of cross seas observed by ERS-2/SAR was analyzed for its generation and development by wave mode data together with the WAM model two-dimensional (2-D) spectra. The sea surface elevation is estimated from these wave mode data with cross sea features using a CMOD type tilt...
متن کاملAn Empirical Imaging Model for Sar Ocean Wave Measurements
Continuous ocean wave measurements on a global basis are still only possible using spaceborne synthetic aperture radar. For more than a decade the European satellites ERS-1 and ERS-2 have acquired about 1500 globally distributed SAR images dayly. ENVISAT is capable of recording some 3000 imagettes. However strong uncertainties in the SAR ocean wave imaging models used so far are well known. The...
متن کاملError Analysis on ESA's Envisat ASAR Wave Mode Significant Wave Height Retrievals Using Triple Collocation Model
Nowadays, spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has become a powerful tool for providing significant wave height (SWH). Traditionally, validation of SAR derived SWH has been carried out against buoy measurements or model outputs, which only yield an inter-comparison, but not an “absolute” validation. In this study, the triple collocation error model has been introduced in the validation of ...
